Until his retirement Ronald Karten was principal bassoonist at the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. He started his career as principal bassoonist at the Residentie Orkest, followed by the Rotterdams Phiharmonisch Orkest. In these orchestras he worked with all the great conductors and with many famous soloists from all over the world. He was the first Dutch bassoonist to play solo on tv, in the program “Jonge mensen op het concertpodium” where he played Weber’s bassoonconcerto. He played with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble and the Fodor Kwintet for many years. With both of these ensembles he made many recordings and toured all around the world. In 1995 he was the first Dutch bassoonist to make a recording of Mozarts bassoonconcerto and Symphonie Concertante. Ronald Karten was a bassoon professor at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam and the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague. For years he was a board member of the Fagotnetwerk and he is still active as a coach and conductor for windplayers of all ages.
